Bauder Launch New BauderBLUE STORMsub System
A green roof system that attenuates water and provides a true Blue Roof solution.
The BauderBLUE STORMsub System uses a new drainage and attenuation board (RE 40) to contain SUB-RE UK, a new Blue Roof substrate, which then acts as the void layer to attenuate rainwater during storm events.
This removes the need for a separate attenuation layer and can reduce the overall depth of the Blue Roof build-up.
Water discharge from the roof remains controlled through the use of the BauderBLUE ST Adjustable Flow Restrictor.
STORMsub provides an environmentally focused solution by reducing the plastic content within the build-up by approximately 87%, whilst also providing a deeper growing medium for vegetation, helping improve establishment and long-term performance.
RE 40 Drainage & Attenuation Board
The RE 40 board has a similar profile to the existing DSE 40 drainage board. However, the RE 40 incorporates a small opening in the base of each cell, allowing the entire drainage board volume to be utilised for rainwater attenuation.
SUB-RE UK Substrate
SUB-RE UK is a single-sized expanded clay substrate with excellent void ratio and water retention characteristics.
The spaces between the clay granules provide attenuation storage, enabling water storage capacities exceeding 50 litres per m² within a 100mm build-up.
The porous clay surface retains moisture while also providing a deep rooting zone for vegetation growth.
SUB-RE UK is approximately 50% void, allowing it to store around 50 litres per m² in a 100mm substrate depth.
Key Benefits
- Reduces plastic content by approximately 87% when compared to the STORMcell system.
- Eliminates the need for a separate attenuation layer.
- Can reduce overall Blue Roof build-up depth.
- Provides a deeper rooting medium for vegetation.
- Substrate depth can be adjusted to achieve the exact level of water attenuation required.
- Offers a highly cost-effective Blue Roof solution.
Availability
Both the RE 40 drainage board and SUB-RE UK substrate became available during the fourth quarter of 2022.
Other Bauder Blue Roof Systems
In addition to STORMsub, Bauder offers two other Blue Roof systems:
- Bauder STORMcell – Utilises the Bauder Attenuation Cell to provide high-capacity stormwater storage.
- Bauder STORMvoid – Uses Bauder Pedestal Systems to create the attenuation void, providing a simple and cost-effective paved Blue Roof solution.
System Build-Up
The original contractor update included a cross-section illustrating the BauderBLUE STORMsub System beneath a Bauder Wildflower Blanket Green Roof, where the STORMsub solution may require a build-up depth of only 180mm.
