Changes in Bauder's Blue Roof Systems
Bauder have extended our Blue Roof offering to include an inverted insulation system.
Blue Roofs Are Now a Common Requirement in New Build Construction
To date, Bauder has offered a warm roof build-up as the preferred Blue Roof solution as it overcomes two key technical concerns: insulation performance and flotation.
However, where a roof is intended to be used as a working platform during construction, an inverted roof build-up is often a more practical solution. Bauder therefore recognises that our Bakor Hot Melt systems provide significant benefits for these projects.
With the launch of CIRIA's Blue Roof Guide (RP1099), a number of technical considerations have been clarified and Bauder now believes robust inverted Blue Roof solutions can be offered with confidence.
Bauder specifications will follow the CIRIA guidance, including the ballast loading requirements necessary to prevent flotation of inverted insulation.
Whilst the guide does not prescribe a specific insulation correction factor, Bauder will specify an additional 10% correction factor within the insulation build-up to offset any potential reduction in thermal performance caused by rainwater cooling.
The thermal performance of insulation within an Inverted Blue Roof will be calculated in accordance with the specifier's requirements. Responsibility for sign-off of the Bauder calculations remains with the project specifier.
Bauder Blue Roof Systems
Bauder now offers three Blue Roof systems:
Bauder STORMcell
Utilises the RWR 100 Attenuation Cell to create a void for rainwater storage during storm events.
Water discharge is controlled by an adjustable flow restrictor, ensuring the required discharge rate is achieved.
STORMcell can provide very high storage capacities, with attenuation layers up to 300mm deep and water storage volumes of up to 285 litres per m².
The system can be finished with either soft landscaping or hard landscaping and offers excellent compressive strength of 400 kN/m².
Bauder STORMvoid
Uses Bauder Pedestal Systems to form the attenuation void.
STORMvoid provides a simple and cost-effective paved Blue Roof solution. Rainwater passes through the open paving joints and is temporarily stored within the natural void created between the pedestals.
When combined with Bauder NC Pedestals, the system can provide a non-combustible Blue Roof solution.
Bauder STORMsub
Uses the new RE 40 Drainage Board and SUB-RE UK substrate (available late 2022) to create a Green Blue Roof solution.
STORMsub uses the Blue Roof substrate itself as the attenuation void to store and regulate rainwater.
Whilst not as efficient as STORMcell in terms of storage capacity, STORMsub contains 87% less plastic and provides the added benefit of a deeper growing medium, allowing improved root development and greater drought resilience for vegetation.
Full details of the STORMsub system will be provided in a separate Contractor Update.
