Rooflights – Storage and Handling
A reminder of the dos and don'ts to avoid possible problems on site.
Storage
When rooflights are delivered to site, the glazing is normally packaged separately.
The glazing should always be stored on its edge with an air gap between each panel. It should be kept out of direct sunlight, preferably under cover, and placed on a level, dry surface until it is ready to be installed.
Rooflight glazing should never be stored flat on the roof surface before fixing, either directly on the roof or on top of its matching upstand. Glazing panels must also never be stacked on top of one another.
This is particularly important during the summer months when the sun is high in the sky, as solar heat build-up can quickly cause permanent distortion of rooflight upstands and/or scorching of the roofing membrane beneath.
The warning label supplied with every Bauder polycarbonate rooflight order provides a reminder of the importance of following this storage guidance.
Illustrations supplied within the original update demonstrate the correct glazing storage technique as well as the type of damage that can occur when glazing is stored flat on top of a rooflight upstand.
Handling
Appropriate precautions should always be taken when handling rooflights, whether at ground level or on the rooftop.
Particular care should be taken during windy or gusty conditions, as sudden changes in wind speed can make carrying larger rooflight units hazardous.
