Activator-Primer (Canister) Additional Uses for This Product
As part of our continuous research, product improvement, feedback and testing, we are further enhancing the uses of Activator-Primer (Canister).
Original Uses of Activator-Primer (Canister)
When we originally launched Activator-Primer in the summer of 2019, the requirements for torch-free membranes were becoming more prominent and we were increasingly seeing more Air & Vapour Control Layers and Underlayers with self-adhesive properties being used.
Coupled with the need for improved U-values, we are seeing increasing instances of multi-layered insulation build-ups within our systems incorporating foil-to-foil installation techniques.
To aid the above and reduce the number of different adhesives required on site, we have further tested the non-flammable Activator-Primer for certain applications as an adhesive.
What Additional Uses Are There for Activator-Primer (Canister)?
Bauder Activator-Primer (Canister) has been specifically developed to provide the necessary preparation of substrates, insulations and underlayers prior to the installation of self-adhesive membranes. However, following our testing we can confirm that the product can also be used as:
- Foil-to-foil contact adhesive
- Fleece-backed membrane adhesive
The product is a synthetic rubber resin-based material using a non-flammable solvent and propellant system.
The additional uses are listed on the new label and additionally detailed in this document and within the Product Data Sheet.
When Do the Changes Come Into Effect?
New specifications written from this date forward will include Activator-Primer for use as a foil-to-foil contact adhesive instead of the current Foil Contact Adhesive (yellow in colour) where there is a requirement for this application.
Other approved uses for Activator-Primer will also be included within our specifications where appropriate.
What About Existing Specifications?
For historic specifications where Activator-Primer has not been specified, we will not insist on its use.
For a limited time, we will stock a small quantity of Foil Contact Adhesive to supply projects where it has already been specified and the product cannot be changed.
Activator-Primer (Canister) Uses

- On Bauder KSD Foil to adhere Bauder FA-TE, FA and FA Tapered insulations
As a Single-Ply Membrane Contact Adhesive
- Thermofol FB membrane to insulation or deck
- All Thermoplan membranes (FB and non-FB) to insulation or deck
Activator-Primer (Canister) Cannot Be Used For
- As a primer onto concrete, lightweight concrete or cementitious materials in either new build or refurbishment projects
- Bonding insulation to mica-faced AVCLs, e.g. FA-TE to KSD Mica
- Laminated paper-foil faced insulation
- EPS or XPS insulations
- BauderROCK, BauderGLAS or proprietary alternatives
- Non-fleece-backed Thermofol to deck or insulation facing
Please contact the Bauder Technical Department if you require any further scenarios to be confirmed.
Characteristics and Advantages
- Non-flammable
- One canister
- One product can perform multiple tasks – primer, activator, adhesive, etc.
- Reduction in waste due to having fewer different adhesives on site
- Quick and easy application
- Primes most substrates
- 50% quicker than a roller
- Helps adhesion in colder temperatures down to zero degrees
- Better adhesion of underlayer without the need for additional heat
- Will pull underlayer into insulation tighter, removing unsightly wrinkles and air pockets
- No Hot Works – improved torch-free applications
- Approximate drying time of 5 to 10 minutes
- Advantage on smaller adhered projects for single-ply systems (assuming DBR 06 or KSD Foil are used)
Health & Safety
Information regarding handling, storage and disposal of this product can be found on the latest version of the product Safety Data Sheet, which should be consulted before use.
Product Information & Technical Performance
Emptying and Disposing of Your Canister Safely
Canisters can be disposed of as scrap metal when depressurised and emptied in accordance with the European Waste Directive. Please refer to the Bauder Canister Set-up & Maintenance Guide for instructions on how to empty, depressurise and dispose of your canister safely.
Disposing of Your Canister Safely and in Accordance with National Regulations
- After the instructions for emptying and depressurising the canister have been followed, the canister will be empty of hazardous materials and fully depressurised. It can therefore be considered scrap metal and disposed of using code EWC 150104 (empty aerosol with no hazardous residues).
- Canisters that remain pressurised and contain adhesive should be disposed of using code EWC 160504 (full or partially empty aerosol).

*Perimeter Zone: BS EN 1991-1-4 uses the following guidance to calculate perimeter zones. Buildings up to and including 10m in height have a perimeter zone of no more than 2m. Buildings over 10m use the calculation 2 × building height ÷ 10. These are general guidance rules and do not take into account all of the information used within a full wind uplift calculation and are therefore superseded by project-specific calculations.
Please refer to the Product Data Sheet for further information on uses and installation guidance.
Storage and Handling
The product should be stored unopened in a secure storage cage, in dry conditions, at temperatures between +5°C and +25°C. This will ensure the stated shelf life. Once opened, the product will have a limited life.
