Green and Blue Roofs
Support the environment with green spaces for people and wildlife, and rooftop SuDS when incorporating a blue roof. These additions transform the roof into a usable facility to support the local environment in different ways.
Overview
Green and blue roofs are important for the modern world as they both support the environment around us in different ways. These roofs can be specified together on the same roof space and can even incorporate a biosolar PV array to maximise the roof space.
In addition to the ecological and aesthetic functions, green roofs are becoming a central building block for restricting rainfall into drainage systems.
Bauder has created many traditional green roofs as well as diverse ones such as parkland, allotments, Japanese gardens and zoological enclosures. We use recycled and reclaimed materials in the landscaping components of our green roofs, further enhancing the environmental benefits of a Bauder green roof.
The way rainwater is handled in cities is currently undergoing fundamental changes with the emphasis moving to attenuation rather than fostering channelling and run-off. A blue roof is specifically designed to attenuate measured amounts of not only rainfall but also stormwater for a 1:100-year event. The stormwater is then released at a specified flow rate over a set period of time, typically 48 hours.
Every green roof also reduces and delays the runoff of rainfall and the greater the depth of substrate the greater the attenuation ability.
Our green and blue roof solutions
Modern buildings are required to have as little impact on their surrounding environment as possible. Using a Bauder green or blue roof - or both - is the perfect opportunity to maximise the traditionally unused space of a flat roof, especially when also incorporating a biosolar PV array. It's so much better than just using the space for rooftop plants or machinery, as now the specifier can turn a flat roof into a usable facility.
